Kirklees College picked up two gongs at the Edurank Awards 2019 – Best YouTube Performance, and the prestigious Edurank’s Social Media Performance of The Year. Both of these were determined by our Edurank algorithm, which means the College would have performed consistently well throughout the year to secure the wins.

We reached out to Lydia Butterworth, Head of Sales and Marketing, at Kirklees College – to find out a little more on what it takes to achieve social media success.

How does it feel to be crowned an Edurank Award winner?

We are over the moon especially because Eduank ratings are based on empirical data, meaning these awards are based on performance rather than subjective criteria.

Why do you think your institution has performed well on social media?

We are lucky to have a team of close knit, talented individuals – who thrive off each other’s creativity. This hothouse of ideas, fuelled by an infectious enthusiasm has generated an innovative and quirky style, totally unique to Kirklees College.

What are your biggest challenges when planning, delivering and reporting on your social media content?

Having a presence 24/7, maintaining an excellent level of customer service and being responsive when the marketing team are only employed on a 9-5 basis. Maintaining a consistent style and tone when in fact, behind the curtain several people have an input.  The differentiation required when targeting diverse audiences. The amount of time required to consistently generate high quality and engaging content.

What does social media success look like to you?

High levels of engagement with subsequent conversion in to measurable actions e.g. Open Day visits or applications etc. We want our social media posts to be equally relevant as they are entertaining.

Is there anything we can expect from you and your social media team in 2019?

We have ambitious plans to further develop our digital personality and widen our breadth of communication channels. We try to keep abreast of social media trends and have recently been looking into the use of Tik Tok.  

If you could win a different Edurank Award, what would it be and why?

We don’t want to be greedy – we have already won 2! We are happier than a Unicorn eating cupcakes made of joy, whilst sliding down a rainbow!
