The University of South Wales (International Profile) won the award for Best Campaign Supporting Diversity at this year’s Edurank Awards. The University supports the LGBTQ+ community, which was shown on social media when they took to Instagram to promote their vlog takeover for Cardiff Pride.

We spoke to the institution’s International Manager, Joanna Scaplehorn, about their success at this year’s Edurank Awards. We wanted to get the scoop on how they achieved such a great result, which clearly resonated with the student market.

Here’s what she had to say:

How does it feel to be crowned an Edurank Award winner?

We are very proud to have won an Edurank award in ‘the Best Campaign Promoting Diversity’ category. We were delighted as we were up against other universities who also have a strong and engaging social media presence. At the University South Wales we welcome over 4,500 international students and we are committed to celebrating their diverse backgrounds. This award was for a vlog that was created by Lukas Navesnik a final year Media Production student from the Czech Republic about the Cardiff Pride festival. This was a great example of a collaboration between our student Lukas, our Marketing team who edited the vlog, and the International Office who posted the vlog and nominated it for the award.

Why do you think your institution has performed well on social media?

Creating informative, interesting and engaging social media content has been a crucial part of our strategy as we understand the value that prospective students, students and alumni place on social media. Everyone in the team is committed to generating interesting social media content so it really is a team effort.

What are your biggest challenges when planning, delivering and reporting on your social media content?

Managing our social media channels is an additional project for the International Recruitment team so managing the platforms on a day to day basis can be a challenge, particularly during the months when we are busy travelling overseas!

What does social media success look like to you?

For us, social media success means meaningful engagement with prospective and current students as well as alumni. Our social media platforms are the best way to showcase the amazing facilities, courses and teaching staff that we have at the University. It’s not a one way thing though; we love following the journeys of our students and sharing their photos and videos.

Is there anything we can expect from you and your social media team in 2019?

We’ve only been actively using some of our social media platforms for a year and a half so it’s been a huge learning curve for us! The most important thing we’ve learned is that our students are our most important ambassadors and they generate the most interesting content. The next year will focus on collaborative projects with our students so watch this space!

If you could win a different Edurank Award, what would it be and why?

Promoting international study is at the heart of everything we do in the International Office so it was fantastic to be highly commended for ‘Best Campaign Promoting International Study’ too!

Once again, congratulations to all our winners, and well done to everyone who took part.
